El Pikacho
Pre-dawn hike to a high viewpoint on Santa María with direct views of the volcanic complex’s activity. Watch night eruptions in the dark, then sunrise over Guatemala’s Pacific slope from 3100 m.
Safe viewpoint route: This hike stays on Santa María and does not enter or approach the dangerous restricted area around the Santiaguito lava domes. El Pikacho is a separate, established viewpoint high above the active complex.

Hike Description

This moderately challenging two-hour hike leads to El Pikacho (Mirador Don Guillermo), an established lookout at 3100 meters on the western flank of Santa María. The viewpoint sits on the edge of the enormous collapse scar created by the 1902 eruption, offering a dramatic perspective across the interior of the Santa María volcanic complex.

From this distant high viewpoint, we can observe frequent explosions, pyroclastic flows, rockfalls, and glowing lava avalanches from the active dome complex below. The route itself remains on Santa María and does not descend toward the domes or enter the restricted danger zone.

We aim to reach the lookout before sunrise for the best chance of seeing glowing activity in the dark. As daylight arrives, the landscape opens to sweeping views toward Mexico, the Guatemalan lowlands, and the Pacific Ocean on clear mornings. We rest at the viewpoint, enjoy breakfast and hot drinks, then descend and return to Xela.

Early morning conditions are usually clear and stable, but weather in the mountains can change quickly, and visibility is not always guaranteed.

1:30 AM
Pickup in Xela. We meet you at your hotel or host family, then drive toward Santa María and begin the ascent.
~4:00 AM
Arrive at El Pikacho. Watch night eruptions, glowing lava avalanches, gas vortexes, and possible pyroclastic flows.
5:30–7:00 AM
Sunrise over the Pacific slope. Enjoy hot drinks and breakfast at the lookout while the coast and surrounding volcanoes light up.
~8:30 AM
Descent and return. We hike down and usually arrive back in Xela between 9:30 and 10:00 AM.
Volcanic Activity

What We May See

The active dome complex often produces activity every 15–60 minutes. On a typical morning from El Pikacho, it is common to see:

  • Pyroclastic flows
  • Strombolian eruptions
  • Vulcanian eruptions
  • Gas vortexes inside the crater
  • Bright lava avalanches
  • Rockfalls on Santa María’s inner walls triggered by volcanic tremors

Activity fluctuates naturally. We can’t promise a specific style of eruption, but the dome is usually very active.

Gear

What to Bring

Pre-dawn at 3100 m is extremely cold, and wind can make it even worse. You’ll need:

  • Warm jacket / winter coat
  • Spare shirt to change out of sweat after the climb
  • Gloves
  • Backpack
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Hiking shoes or boots
  • Water (2-3 litres)
  • Rain jacket (rain is rare in the morning but possible)

Payment and cancellation details

After we confirm availability, we’ll send you a link to pay the Q100 per person deposit. This confirms your reservation and reserves your guide for the day. The remaining balance is paid on the day of the tour.

Because we set this time aside specifically for your group, the deposit is normally non-refundable if you decide to cancel. If your plans change and you let us know more than 24 hours before your tour, we’re happy to transfer your deposit to another available date.

For groups of 4 or more, if you cancel more than 24 hours before the tour and prefer not to reschedule, 50% of the deposit will be refunded.

If we need to cancel the tour due to dangerous weather or any other circumstances that prevent us from operating safely, you will receive a full refund, including your deposit.
